Barcelona is reportedly eyeing a late move for Manchester City’s Sergio Gomez as a potential replacement for the injured Alejandro Balde. According to Fichajes, Barcelona is looking to make a last-minute signing to fill the void left by Balde’s injury and have set their sights on Gomez.
With the loss of Gavi to a season-ending knee injury and now Balde’s potential season-ending injury, Barcelona is in dire need of a left-back. Balde is set to undergo surgery for a problem with his femoral biceps on his right leg, which could see him sidelined for the remainder of the campaign.
In light of these injuries, Barcelona is exploring several options for a replacement, including Marc Cucurella from Chelsea, Juan Miranda from Real Betis, and Manchester City’s Sergio Gomez. The club is particularly interested in Gomez as Pep Guardiola could potentially spare the 23-year-old left-back and let Barcelona have him for his fair valuation.
Gomez, who has made nine appearances for Manchester City this season, is also being considered by Chelsea as a potential replacement for Cucurella, who is injured until March. However, it is understood that Guardiola does not use the Spaniard much, making him open to his departure.
Despite Barcelona’s financial constraints, it is believed that they can afford a late signing using Article 77 of La Liga rules, which allows them to spend roughly €5.4 million on a new player in this window. The report also suggests that Barcelona’s current financial state may lead them to seek a last-minute move for Gomez.
However, there are challenges ahead for Barcelona, with questions about whether Manchester City would agree to a move at the price range stipulated. Considering City’s initial investment of over €15 million on Gomez, they would likely want to sell him at or near his current market price, which stands at €10 million according to Transfermarkt.
With these factors in mind, Barcelona may have to consider a potential loan deal for Gomez, as Manchester City may be hesitant to sell him below his market value. Despite the challenges, Gomez remains a viable target for Barcelona as they seek to remedy their injury crisis in the left-back position.
