Manchester City full-back Joao Cancelo made a return to the pitch on Saturday for Barcelona against Villarreal. Although he came in as a substitute, it was not a game to remember for him. His clearance allowed Villarreal to score their third goal, and it was reminiscent of the goal Mo Salah scored against City once at Anfield. Cancelo took to social media after the game to share a defiant message with his fans. He described the game as a disaster.
Cancelo admitted to having a ‘disaster’ of a performance for Barcelona against Villarreal. He was indeed hoping to make a good impact yesterday against Villarreal, but it really didn’t go well for him. He was at fault for the second goal and was out of position for Villarreal’s third. After the game, he branded himself as “a disaster”. But he also took to social media to send a message of defiance. He said: “With every hit a victory, with every mistake a new opportunity to learn”.
The Portugal international received backing from fellow countryman Joao Felix, who told him ‘The best in the world make mistakes too!’. Felix’s comment is indeed spot on. Cancelo will be very frustrated with his performance for Barca against Villarreal, but there’s no denying that he remains one of the finest full-backs in the world, at least in an attacking sense.
City officials will hope he can bounce back from this showing quickly and that he can keep his market value high going into the summer ahead of a potential sale. Joan Laoprta and Deco both admitted that Barcelona want to buy him in recent months. Fans showed plenty of support for Cancelo after the disappointing game.
It is important for Cancelo to move away from the narrative about his defensive capabilities and bounce back from his tough outing against Villarreal. Despite this, there is no doubt that Cancelo’s attacking prowess remains a strong asset for him and his team.
