UEFA reconsidering Marciniak for Manchester City-Inter after far-right rally

Referee Szymon Marciniak has been appointed to the Champions League Final between Inter and Manchester City, but UEFA admit he could be replaced for speaking at a far-right rally in Poland.

The match is at the Ataturk Stadium in Istanbul on June 10 and concludes the 2022-23 club season.

Marciniak was named as the official for the big game, but La Repubblica and The Guardian now claim that UEFA are reconsidering their options with just days to go before kick-off.

This is because of reports Marciniak spoke at a far-right rally in Poland with politician Slawomir Mentzen, who is well known for his homophobic and anti-Semitic views.

It is suggested that UEFA asked the referee for urgent clarification and are ready to make a decision tomorrow on whether to stick with Marciniak or choose someone else for the role.

He did not merely attend the event, but was a keynote speaker on Monday at the ‘Everest’ event.

“Uefa is aware of the allegations surrounding Szymon Marciniak and is seeking urgent clarification,” read a statement.

“Uefa and the whole football community abhor the ‘values’ that are promoted by the group in question and takes these allegations very seriously.

”A further announcement will be made tomorrow, after reviewing all the evidence.”

It would be a real fall from grace for Marciniak, who officiated the 2022 World Cup Final between Argentina and France.
