Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has claimed that qualifying for the UEFA Champions League is the “best we can give to the club” following Saturday’s 2-0 win over Newcastle in the Premier League.
Arsenal lead the way in the Premier League title race with five points ahead of reigning champions Manchester City. The two top teams still have to face each other again this season in what could potentially decide where the title ends up this term.
The Gunners hold a good advantage over City at present but there are plenty of twists and turns still to come in the season with 12 games left to play.
Man City, who are bidding to win a third successive Premier League title this season, go into next Tuesday’s second-leg clash against RB Leipzig level, after a 1-1 draw at the Red Bull Arena in Germany last month.
The reigning Premier League champions are still yet to win the elite European competition but reached the final in 2021 and were agonisingly dumped out at the semi-finals stages against Real Madrid last season.
Pep Guardiola’s side are currently undertaking their 12th consecutive campaign in the UEFA Champions League, and despite City’s hunt for silverware, according to the boss, qualifying for the competition is “best” achievement for the Blues
“If we qualify for the Champions League next season, I’ll go to the best restaurant in Manchester and make the best dinner because it’s the best we can give to the club,” said the Catalan.
“To be in the Champions League is sometimes more important than winning the Premier League.”
These Guardiola’s comments shared on Twitter gathered a number of replies from a wide range of Man City supporters.
@tomrussell121: “This ain’t it, Pep.”
@KDB_Tech: “Not a good sign I hope he ain’t given up”

@GeorgeOkello: “This is sounding very Wenger-esque I can’t lie”
@ManCitty9320: “Standards have dropped. He knows he can’t win PL.”
@Makubey: “Pep, don’t tell me your conceding/admitting to Arsenal winning the league..”
@Black_jack773: “He does know that by winning the league we’d automatically be in the Champions League right?”
@KiNgTiTuS21: “If you don’t get it forget about it .. this is a message to someone”
@mbaalthani8: “Good that he said this. We can’t catch Arsenal. Better to give up hopes now than be disappointed when we don’t win it”
@HaribossCity: “He said its more important… and he’s right Liverpool have won one title in 30 years. Its their UCL qualifications that are keeping them relevant. Even more so for Spurs. He’s not saying winning the PL isn’t the goal every season.”
