Jamie Carragher has been discussing Erling Haaland ahead of Liverpool’s game against Manchester City this weekend.
Pep Guardiola’s side travel to Anfield on Sunday afternoon for what many thought would be a top of the table clash before the start of the season. However, Liverpool are languishing in 11th place, 13 points behind City, having won just two of their league games so far.
The Blues will know just how dangerous Liverpool can be, as the Reds showed in their 7-1 demolition of Rangers during their mid-week Champions League fixture. City have plenty of firepower themselves, with Haaland setting a blistering pace in the race for the golden boot, having scored 15 goals in the league already.
The Norwegian is the man on everyone’s mind heading into this game, and there have been plenty of comparisons between Haaland and Liverpool’s new signing, Darwin Nunez.
Plenty of Liverpool supporters will be envious of City having a player like Haaland, but Carragher doesn’t think he’d be all that good if he was playing on Merseyside.
Indeed, the pundit says that Haaland wouldn’t score anywhere near as many goals for Liverpool due to the amount of service he’d get.
He told Sky Sports : “Look at the goals Haaland has scored, they have the best passer of the ball we’ve ever seen in the Premier League and that helps when you have Haaland up front.
“If Haaland was playing for Liverpool right now, there’s no way he would score that amount of goals because he wouldn’t have that quality behind him and Liverpool aren’t playing as well,”
Carragher also thinks that Liverpool will be better off focusing their defensive efforts away from the Norwegian striker.
“Two Manchester City players jump out as players to watch for Liverpool – Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne, but they’re almost like a package together! I’d almost be more focused on De Bruyne rather than Haaland in this game.
“If you stop De Bruyne, you take 50 per cent away from Haaland as well as the connection the two have got is there already. And for me, De Bruyne is the best midfielder in the world.”
“Yes, Haaland has been an absolute sensation in the Premier League but he needs servicing and you can’t get anyone better than De Bruyne. When you’ve got the best passer of the ball that the Premier League has ever seen, it certainly helps when you have Haaland up front.
