Manchester City fans have been reacting to a post on Twitter which relays a report that claims Sporting Lisbon have triggered the €8.5M buy option for Pedro Porro.
Porro may not be a name familiar to too many fans, though he has been on Manchester City’s books since 2019. The 22-year-old joined City from Girona in a deal the Mirror reported was worth £11m. Girona’s majority owners are City Football Group.
The Spaniard – who can operate in a number of positions on the right side – was immediately loaned to Real Valladolid upon signing.
He returned to Man City the year after, though did not make a single first-team appearance before being shipped out on loan again. Portugal was his destination this time, with a two-year stint at Sporting Lisbon agreed.
Almost two years on and Porro is thriving in Portugal. He has played right-back, wing-back and right midfield in Lisbon and has four goals and seven assists to his name this season.
It was reported in March that Sporting were working to use their €8.5M buy option on Pedro Porro and are closing in on his signature.
According to Portuguese newspaper Record as relayed by Sport Witness, Sporting have triggered the buying option for the Manchester City player and his permanent transfer to Lisbon is confirmed.
The report states that Porro has signed a deal until 2025, with a €45M release clause. Man City will have a €20M buy-back clause which wasn’t even included in the original agreement.
While City have no cause for concern at right-back at present, it is testament to Pedro Porro’s burgeoning talent that including a buy-back clause was a major priority for the English giants.
In Kyle Walker and Joao Cancelo, Manchester City have a strong claim for having arguably the two best right-backs in the world at their disposal.
The report was shared on Twitter by City Xtra and it attracted plenty of attention from the club’s supporters.
