Fernandinho has stated he ‘doesn’t think’ he will extend his Manchester City contract beyond this season.
The 36-year-old midfielder, who has spent the last eight and a half years with the Citizens, signed a one-year contract extension in the summer, which is due to expire in June 2022.
While the ageing midfielder may be past his unparalleled best, and with the Brazilian international no longer commands a starting place as Rodri is first-choice under Pep Guardiola, he continues to remain a stellar operator on and off the field.
With the Brazilian’s contract expiring at the end of this season, it is unclear if he will continue to play for the Blues beyond this season.
Asked whether he planned to sign a new contract at the Etihad Stadium ahead of Man City’s Champions League quarter-final second leg against Atletico Madrid, the 36-year-old said: “I don’t think so.
“Yes, I want to play. I will go back to Brazil, for sure. I’ve decided with my family, it’s the most important for me,” he continued.
These Fernandinho’s comments were shared on twitter by City Xtra and its attracted plenty of attentions from Man City fans.
“Hope he gets offered a coaching position of some sort, knew this day would come but hoped he would stay another year.”
