Atletico Madrid have confirmed that they will be without centre-back Jose Gimenez for their Champions League quarter-final clash against Manchester City.
The 27-year-old was injured against Alaves, and has been suffering from ‘some discomfort, although the exact nature of the injury issue isn’t shared.
Gimenez underwent a series of medical tests on Sunday morning, in the hope that he’d be available to face Manchester City at the Etihad.
However, according to Marca, those test didn’t go the way the player or Atletico wanted, and subsequently the Uruguay international hasn’t even been able to take the flight to England.
Gimenez’s absence is a huge blow for Diego Simeone as he has established himself as a crucial player on the domestic and European stage.
The Uruguay defender has played in six of Atletico’s seven games in the competition this season, including both legs of their round of 16 triumph over Manchester United.
He has formed a formidable partnership with former City defender Stefan Savic and helped Atletico turn their form around. Going into Tuesday night’s first leg, they have won six games in a row in all competitions and sit third in LaLiga.
The news of Jose Gimenez’s injury was shared on Twitter by City Xtra and it attracted plenty of attention from Man City supporters.

“We won’t get to the center of their defence, so this is hardly a good news. 85 out of the 90mins, we’re overloading the wings and making automated passes because “Beautiful football” and possession stats won’t grab themselves..”

“I just hope we have our finishing boots like in the 5 nil win against sporting.”
