‘Would happily take him’, ‘He is unreal’, ‘Laporte regen’ – Many fans react as Ajax Rising star reveals desire for Man City move

Ajax youngster Jurriën Timber has revealed he would prefer to join Manchester City over Barcelona if he had to choose between the pair.

Ajax have a history of producing some exceptional players before selling them on to Europe’s elite teams. Timber has put in some solid displays at centre-half over the last two seasons, leading to rumours of a move.

At 20-years-old it appears he has a bright future in front of him, and many are predicting that he could follow in the footsteps of Mathijs de Ligt, who enjoyed a similar progression before a £76.95m move to Juventus in 2019.

The Ajax youngster, who is now an established first-team star under Erik Ten Hag, has revealed he would prefer to join Manchester City over Barcelona if he had to choose between the pair.

“I like to play for prizes; that’s why I say City now. Barcelona has a less good period at the moment,” he told Helden Magazine, relayed by Sport Witness.

“I want to grow as a player, use my time at Ajax to become even better. At Ajax, you have to be happy if you are in the starting line-up; that’s why I want to enjoy this time consciously.

“I play for the prizes here; there is no better place to be. Ajax was always my dream club; I also slept under an Ajax duvet.

“I plan to stay here for a while. But if Manchester City calls, what should I do?”

These Jurriën Timber’s comments were shared on Twitter by City Report and it attracted plenty of attention from the club’s supporters.

“Laporte regen. Sign him ASAP. He’s already great on the ball, but with Laporte’s classes he will be one of the greatest of all time.”

“Would buy him in a heart beat. Infact sell Ake and buy him. He’s young so he wouldn’t mind the less game time under Pep, but the growth will be exponential. Meanwhile, Ake will be happy else where and we’ll have a structured wage bill..”

“No idea who he is but if Laporte or Ake go get this guy in.”

“I would happily take him. If Newcastle/West Ham rumours are true about Ake, I wouldn’t mind selling to get Timber.”

How good is Jurrien Timber?

Jurrien Timber is very much in the mould of a modern, Dutch centre-back like Virgil van Dijk in that he has an impressive combination of physicality as well as prowess on the ball.

At Ajax he is naturally used to playing out from the back and so would fit in with most elite sides in that respect.

While Jurrien Timber has some of the technical traits to play for a Pep Guardiola side, his slight frame ensures he cannot dismantle any of Manchester City’s centre-half options at present.
