Jack Grealish says Manchester City team-mate Phil Foden looked like Paris Saint-Germain’s Lionel Messi as he delivered a second-half assist in a 2-0 FA Cup victory over Peterborough on Tuesday.
Largely, City struggled to get their attacking game flowing and had to wait for the hour mark for their first shot on target, through which Riyad Mahrez opened the scoring.
Grealish, who started for the first time in almost a month after suffering from a shin injury, scored his first goal in the FA Cup after a supreme assist from Phil Foden.
Foden pinged a left-footed ball over the top of the defence to play Grealish in on goal, and Grealish managed to finish easily to the near-post.
His strike, however, was a moment of genuine quality. The former Aston Villa man reserved special praise for Foden after his tremendous assist set up that goal.
Speaking to ITV after the game, the 26-year-old revealed watching videos of Paris Saint-Germain Messi had played a role in the move.
“It (Foden’s pass) was unbelievable,” Grealish said of Phil Foden’s pass.
‘You know what’s funny? Before the game on the coach here I was sat next to Phil and was scrolling through Twitter when a video of Messi came up, his passing. We were just watching it.
“As soon as he scored, he came over to me and said, ‘it was just like Messi’.”
Speaking on the link-up with Foden, Jack Grealish said, “I have the kind of link-up with Phil. It’s been a long time coming because I don’t think he’s assisted me yet. It was a good moment for myself!”
These Grealish’s comments were shared on Twitter by City Xtra and it attracted plenty of attention from the club’s supporters.
