Pep Guardiola has told Jack Grealish to stop worrying about his stats and just focus on making a contribution to the Manchester City team.
Grealish has struggled to make an impact at the Etihad this season following his British-record £100million move from Aston Villa.
The attacking midfielder has looked like someone who is finding the price tag a burden as he tries to adapt to life with Guardiola’s champions.
Grealish has scored just one goal since September, three in total and has found it hard to nail down a regular place in the Spaniard’s starting XI.
But Guardiola told him to forget about meaningless numbers, and assess his impact on the team as a whole.
Asked about Grealish’s stats comment, the manager said: “Maybe he’s wrong. Maybe he listens too much to what people say. It’s wrong but the statistics are better and he plays quite similar to Aston Villa in terms of ball contact.”
‘We didn’t buy him to score 45 goals. He doesn’t have that quality — he has another one. Players today play for the statistics, but this is the biggest mistake they can do.’
New signings often take time to settle under Guardiola, but he believes Grealish has shown enough.
‘Jack is playing well, if he wasn’t I would tell him,’ he said.
These Guardiola’s comments were shared on Twitter by City Xtra and it attracted plenty of attention from the club’s supporters.

“Grealish does offer to this team and again our fans must know Pep knows exactly what to do with players like jack, he isn’t gonna betray his trust with Jack and disrespect him. he is playing well but I feel like stats are the only point of football nowadays.”
