‘We’re getting him’, ‘could be a good replacement for Fernandinho’ – Man City fans react as club add Portuguese talent valued at €60m to transfer list

Manchester City fans have been reacting to a post on Twitter which relays a report of the club’s interest in Sporting midfielder Matheus Nunes.

The youngster is a very dynamic central midfielder who can impose himself in the middle of the park and can also push the team forward.

The Sporting no. 8 has made 24 starts and two substitute appearances in the Portuguese league so far this season, scoring two goals and given two assists in those games. He also has two assists in six Champions League games this campaign.

Nunes impressed Guardiola, even in a 5-0 defeat. After City destroyed Sporting, Guardiola was quick to comment on the performance of the 23-year-old.

“Matheus Nunes is one of the best players in the world today. Despite the difficulties and some mistakes, I have to be very satisfied because we took a big step towards the next round,” Guardiola said in his interview after the game, as reported by Tribal Football.

To receive such a compliment in a hefty defeat, Nunes really must have stood out in the Sporting side. Guardiola is now interested in making Nunes a Manchester City player, with the two clubs reportedly having a good relationship.

This weekend, the Portuguese media came up with an interesting report that revealed that Sporting’s representatives and Manchester City’s representatives met last week over a meal at Pep Guardiola’s restaurant, discussing the player in question.

According to Tuesday’s edition of Record Portugal as relayed by Sport Witness, the chat between Sporting and City officials was not just about Matheus Nunes, with the possibility of ‘deepening the partnership that links the clubs’ also being discussed.

The report claims Sporting would look for a fee close to Matheus Nunes’ €60M release clause, although ‘could be flexible’ and take part of it as potential bonus payments. The ‘doors are open’ for a possible summer move.

In reaction to the report shared on Twitter by City Xtra, some Man City fans as usual have been expressing their thoughts and opinions.

It appears the youngster has been identified as an ideal candidate to add more depth in Man City’s midfield unit, especially with Fernandinho unlikely to continue.

The Sporting player could fit nicely as a new 6/8 player under Guardiola. He could be a long term replacement for Ilkay Gundogan in the City squad. Gundogan, who turns 32 this year, doesn’t have long left on his contract that is set to expire in 15 months.

Nunes is still only 23, so City could explore the option of bringing Nunes to The Etihad. He would fit and Pep could be creative with his use as his pliability is of huge advantage. Of course that would mean adding a midfielder at a price and should be balanced with a departure.
