Manchester City have reportedly identified San Lorenzo defender Nicolas Fernandez Mercau as a potential transfer target, according to a new report.
Having already signed Julian Alvarez from River Plate, the Premier League giants have continued to be linked with several other South American players.
According to TNT Sports as translated and relayed by Sport Witness, City are giving consideration to making a move for San Lorenzo defender Fernandez Mercau.
As per the report, Man City have been watching the Argentine full-back ‘for a while’, with Marcau having recently established a starting place in the San Lorenzo starting XI following a series of impressive displays on the left side of defence.
The 22-year-old has spent the early stages of his professional career with his current club, but he has only made 24 first-team appearances in the first team.
Fernandez Mercau can play at left-back, an area which Pep Guardiola has sometimes found problematic, as well as further down that flank.
The report states that the reigning champions of England will continue to scout him this Thursday when San Lorenzo take on Gimnasia in the Argentine Primera Division.
City are on the lookout for a new left-sided full-back, with Benjamin Mendy’s career at the club all but over.
Pep Guardiola has been using Joao Cancelo as his preferred option in the position, and the Portuguese international has excelled as well.
However, he is naturally a right-back, while backup option Oleksandr Zinchenko’s future has been called into action due to his reduced minutes.
Nathan Ake is another player who is capable of slotting in at left-back. However, the Dutchman would not provide the same level of tactical flexibility and attacking intent that someone like Cancelo does.
So, it makes sense for the Cityzens to bring in a new left-back who can provide cover for Cancelo and grow into the role in the years to come.
