Manchester City fans have been reacting to a post on Twitter which relays a report that claims the club’s owners believe Pep Guardiola can be persuaded to stay longer and build a lasting dynasty at the Etihad.
The Blues boss is well into his sixth year at the Etihad – two more than he spent at Barcelona and three more than Bayern Munich – and is under contract for a further season that takes him to the summer of 2023.
According to Sunday Mirror Sport, the Dutch sounded out Pep Guardiola about his future plans before he signed a new two-year extension with Man City, but were told that the manager had unfinished business but a future link-up was not discounted.
The report states that the Dutch FA have drawn up plans to convince the 51-year-old to join them as an international coach at the end of his reign with City to follow in the footsteps of his mentor Johan Cruyff.
The Sunday Mirror Sport report claims Guardiola is considered a disciple of Cruyff’s ‘Total Football’ style and would consider the opportunity to manage the Oranje a ‘dream’.
The Spaniard has previously hinted that he would like to challenge himself on the international stage. “The next step will be a national team, if the opportunity presents itself,” he said last year.
However, as per the report, City’s owners still believe Guardiola can be persuaded to stay longer and build a lasting dynasty at the Etihad.
The club’s trust in Guardiola is such that they will have no worries about allowing him to go into the final year of his current contract.
The Manchester City boss recently revealed that he will never ‘betray’ the club and is always open to making decisions in tandem with the club officials.
The report was shared on Twitter by City Xtra, and it attracted plenty of attention from the club’s supporters.
