Manchester City fans have been reacting to a post on Twitter which relays a report that has provided an eye-opening insight into why Pep Guardiola’s side did not sign Cristiano Ronaldo.
City were in advanced talks for a sensational move for Ronaldo in the final days of the transfer window before Manchester United got wind and made a late approach to sign their former winger, but the homecoming has not been as happy as he hoped.
The 36-year-old has scored 14 goals and assisted three in 23 appearances more than any other asset in the squad, but his homecoming has fallen well below par due to the players’ expectations of helping the club back to their glory days.
United have endured a miserable campaign, sitting seventh in the league table and a huge 21 points behind City at the summit.
Ronaldo long-term future at Manchester United is already currently up in the air as the Portuguese international seems unhappy. He recently gave a brutally honest interview to Sky Sports, appearing to take aim at the mentality of some of the club’s younger players.
And the former Sporting Lisbon, Real Madrid and Juventus star was also visibly furious with Ralf Rangnick for coming off against Brentford on Wednesday night.
According to The Telegraph, while Cristiano Ronaldo did hold extensive talks with Man City and left Juventus team-mates with the impression he would sign for Pep Guardiola, sources have since suggested he became concerned that he may not be guaranteed a starting place at Man City.
The Athletic further report that City insist that it was them that pulled out of the race rather than United’s sway whereas the red half of the city believe that they are just trying to save face.
The report was shared on Twitter by City Xtra and it attracted plenty of attention from the club’s supporters.
It’s true, he doesn’t get into the starting 11 https://t.co/gTTHNaFDjn

Maguire, Alexis Sanchez, Fred and now Ronaldo. Txiki loves dodging a bullet to United 😭😂

He’d be nowhere near our starting side

No way he thought he’d be benched by literally no striker 😭

I mean he’s right none of city players are guaranteed starter bar Ederson

No is guaranteed a starting place. He thinks it’s all about him 😭

He’s right, he wouldn’t. But he would still have probably won the golden boot and a title, and maybe even the Balon d’Or. He chose sentiment over his winning mentality, which I’m sure he regrets, deep down.
