Kyle Walker has had his Champions League suspension increased to three games following his red card against RB Leipzig, which was dubbed as an ‘assault’ by UEFA.
The England international was sent off late in City’s 2-1 loss to RB Leipzig on matchday six in the group stages in December, after kicking out at Andre Silva.
A red card would usually only see a player banned for a single game but the severity of the incident has seen Walker’s suspension increased.
UEFA have now decided that the necessary punishment for Walker is a three-match ban. When announcing the infringement, European football’s governing body described his offence as ‘assault’.
It comes as a major blow to Manchester City who will now be without the right-back for both legs of their last 16 tie against Sporting and, should Pep Guardiola’s side advance, the first leg of the following quarter-final.
Joao Cancelo and Oleksandr Zinchenko – who have both primarily played at left-back this season – are now the only senior full-back options in Pep Guardiola’s squad to face Sporting.
Centre-back Nathan Ake also has experience at playing as a left-back if necessary.
In reaction to the news shared on twitter by City Xtra, Many Man City fans have been sharing their thoughts and opionions.

3 are you joking with me. No way was that foul or game worthy of 3 match ban. UEFA doing their best to make sure City don’t win.
