Pep Guardiola will be in charge of Manchester City’s Premier League clash at Newcastle United on Sunday, after returning a negative COVID-19 test.
The 50-year-old cancelled his pre-match press conference on Friday after his lateral flow test revealed an inconclusive result before arriving at the Citizens’s training complex.
However, a follow-up PCR test has cleared the Catalan to take charge of the league leaders at St James’ Park.
City are preparing to take on Newcastle United on Sunday and are one of just five Premier League games still scheduled to go ahead this weekend in the English top flight who have so far managed to avoid an outbreak of Covid-19.
Guardiola also confirmed that none of his players have so far tested positive in recent days.
“Everyone is fit, it’s just Ferran (Torres) missing (due to a long-term injury). Joao (Cancelo) is back after (his suspension against) Leeds and we will travel to Newcastle with everyone ready to play,” Guardiola told the City website.
Had Guardiola tested positive for COVID-19 on his return to Manchester, the City boss would have been forced into a 10-day period of self-isolation, which would have ruled him out Sunday’s trip to the North East as well as the Boxing Day clash at home against Leicester City.
The news was shared on Twitter by City Xtra and it attracted plenty of attention from the club’s supporters.
