Talks are set to be held over the cancellation of the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) due to the rising Omicron Covid-19 cases.
With the tournament currently scheduled to take place between January 9 and February 6, clubs across the Premier League were set to lose first-team players for a crucial period of the season.
However, reports from Get France Football have suggested that the Confederation of African Football (CAF) are undertaking discussions around possibly cancelling the tournament in Cameroon.
The European Club Association (ECA) have written to CAF informing them there is ‘no intention’ to release African players for the four-week period.
The above is owing to rising Covid-19 cases and fears across the planet of the developing Omicron strain.
Sources within the CAF, however, maintain that these claims are “fake news,” though the complexities of arranging compensation with Cameroon may have prompted this stance.
Mahmoud claims that the CAF are in talks with Cameroonian Football Federation president Samuel Eto’o at present, with there also a possibility of the tournament going ahead without players based in Europe.
However, the news was shared on Twitter by City Xtra and it attracted plenty of attention from Manchester City fans.
Absolute madness. https://t.co/4uf8JIz1Mx

Well at least there will be no excuse from any side for not winning the title then.

So when it’s Africa there are no ways to put protocols in place to ensure the competition goes on smoothly. It’s an indefinite cancellation. Wow

This is madness… so the EPL, EUROS, and other competitions can go on but they are suddenly very concerned bc the AFCON is in Africa. COVID19 is one of the smallest problems in Africa (in comparison to Europe) and this excuse is unimaginable.
