Pep Guardiola insisted the Premier League title race is far from over despite Manchester City heading into the new year eight points clear at the top.
Phil Foden’s first-half goal was enough for City to secure a 1-0 win at Brentford and tighten their grip on top spot after slip-ups by Liverpool and Chelsea.
City were boosted by Liverpool’s 1-0 defeat away at LeicesterCity the evening prior and would have been delighted to finish their contest and seen Chelsea had also slipped up at home to Brighton& Hove Albion.
Despite this, Guardiola has claimed that both Liverpool and Chelsea can still catch his City side, and made it clear that it’s his side’s ten-game winning run that has resulted in them being eight points clear.
“We won the game, we are on a good run, but it’s the end of December,” the City boss said.
“There are many games to go. We are eight points in front but there are 54 still to play for and many tough games still to play.
“I’m not going to believe anyone who says it’s already done. The teams we have with Chelsea and Liverpool are more than exceptional.
“We have the distance not because they dropped points but because we won 10 in a row. But there are 54 points still to play for.”
He then added later on his press conference: “All of you, thank you for your nice words because we win. But I am not going to believe the words you are going to say about thinking it’s already done.
