The top scorer in the upcoming Copa Argentina will be called the Sergio Kun Agüero award.
The Manchester City legend was forced to retire from football last week at the age of just 33 due to heart problems.
Agüero, who wore the Independiente de Avellaneda shirt, made his debut in Argentine soccer at just 15 years and 35 days in 2003. From then on, the attacker added continuity in Argentine soccer and this was key to starting a successful career in football.
Aguero’s final appearances for his country were in last summer’s Copa America in which Argentina finally lifted the trophy for the first time since 1993.
Deserved tribute to the career of Sergio Agüero.
This Wednesday the draw for the 2022 edition of the Argentine Cup took place and, beyond the exciting crosses, there was a special announcement.
The competition has honoured Aguero as the Argentine Football Association’s president, Claudio Tapia, announced that the golden boot award for the tournament will now be called the ‘Sergio Kun Aguero award.’
“More than nice news, it is a nice tribute,” Tapia is quoted as saying by El Comercio.
“I want to tell you that the award for the top scorer or scorers in the Copa Argentina will bear the name of Sergio ‘Kun’ Agüero.”
The news was shared on Twitter by City Xtra and it attracted plenty of attention from the club’s supporters.
