Pep Guardiola insists Bernardo Silva is happy at Manchester City but has hinted the midfielder could choose to leave the club in the future.
The Citizens boss Pep Guardiola revealed during the summer transfer window that the Portugal international had informed the club of his desire to leave and the club was open to the prospect of allowing Silva to leave.
The deadline passed with the versatile attacker still in Manchester, though, and he has been an important player for the English champions this term, making six appearances in all competitions.
The 27-year-old, who cost £43m, has had a gentleman’s agreement to leave in the event of a suitable bid for the last year. But no side offered enough, and the midfielder stayed.
Silva has started five of City’s six Premier League games so far this term and scored the winner in the 1-0 victory away at Leicester earlier in September and he impressed alongside Rodri in a deeper-lying central midfield role in Saturday’s win over fellow title favourites Chelsea.
In the most significant victory of Manchester City’s season so far, their most important individual was Bernardo Silva who neither wanted nor expected to remain at the club beyond the summer.
“What a performance,” said Guardiola. “He is so intuitive. It is not his role as a holding midfielder but he knows how to play it and how to anticipate what is going to happen, with the ball or without the ball.”
“All I want is for Bernardo to be happy, here or anywhere,” said Guardiola.
“He is a guy that deserves the best. How well he played against Chelsea is no surprise. How many times have we seen it? He was an incredible signing for us because he is an exceptional person.
“I never forget the second Premier League we won, with 98 points, he was the best player in England. He was nominated [for an award] but he was the best.
“After that season, later he dropped a little bit, he was not in the position he prefers but now he’s back and hopefully he can help us.
“If, at the end, he wants to leave and decides [to go] the only thing I can say is that the guy or the club that gets Bernardo is going to take one of the best players in the world.
“Is he happier? You cannot play in this way if you are not happy, it’s impossible.”
These Guardiola’s comment on Bernardo’s future has prompt Plenty of Sky Blues to react on social media.
True, we can’t hold him hostage though it will be heartbreaking to see him leave. So passionate

We need to do everything we possibly can to make this man want to stay

I don’t think he wants to leave even next season, I don’t think. He is happy because he knows is doing really well. Everything will depends how many minutes he plays. Normal, all players like to play.

It’s different with Bernado silva, He’ll stay eventually provided game time is guaranteed. If only Sané could’ve hold his horses much longer and fight for his position, he’d be much better off at city than he’s at Bayern.
