Manchester City are reportedly one of the clubs on alert for a potential transfer deal for Bayern Munich defender David Alaba.
The 28-year-old Austria international’s contract expire at the Allianz Arena at the end of the season and it appears he is set to depart with a host of elite clubs desperate for his signature.
According to the Daily Star, the Cityzens as well as Chelsea are set to make a late surge in the transfer battle to land the Bayern Munich star this summer, who may not be heading for a move to Spanish football after all.
The report explains that it now looks like Real Madrid and Barcelona may struggle due to financial uncertainty and the Covid-19 crisis to meet the versatile defender’s £400,000-a-week wage demands, which have now open the door City.
The report also adds that although there is no way the City would pay Alaba £400,000-a-week, as that would smash the Etihad pay-structure, the club’s lucrative bonus scheme would help bridge the difference.
Pep Guardiola enjoyed great success with Alaba at Bayern and the two had an excellent working relationship. He could be the perfect solution to the ongoing questions over the left-back role at the Etihad and an option at defensive midfield.
However, City’s priority for the summer transfer window remains a striker, having focused on defence last year and midfield the year before that.
