Manchester City where able to pick up a valuable 3 points in their chase for the title this season at home to Brighton.
Phil Foden ‘s fine 44th-minute strike gave City a 1-0 lead over the Seagulls at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday evening.
City held that lead until stoppage time, when the Citizens were given a chance to seal the game from the spot after Brighton goalkeeper Robert Sanchez brought down Kevin De Bruyne in the box.
Sterling – on as a late substitute – blazed the stoppage time spot-kick over the bar, missing his third consecutive penalty for City in the process
The penalty miss sparked questions as to why De Bruyne did not take the spot kick. After the match, Pep Guardiola explained why Sterling was the man to strike the penalty and not his typical taker.
“I think Kevin was tired, but I love the personality of Raheem to try it,” he said. “Next time he will score.”
“Kevin is the taker but he was struggling in the last 10 minutes, exhausted. I like guys to take responsibility to take the penalty. It was Rash and next time it will be better.”
Here’s what the fans have been saying about the miss:
I’d let Ederson take them, he’s an outfield player in disguise anyway.

Ederson better than him

never let him take pen again

He will miss again, we all know it. Never ever give him the ball to take another pen for this club. Never again.

They could have handed the penalty kick to any player and I’d have had confidence…but not with Sterling! He’s terrible at spot kicks.

Because you only want him to kill Sterling’s confidence right? Sterling has helped this team. We will never allow biased fake fans to bring him down. I watched, Nasiri, Yaya, Bali, Aguero, KDB all lost penalty. But we stood by our players, mostly when we won. #Stopraheemhatred

Let’s be real here. Pep isn’t going to slander Sterling in the media, so he’s trying to find at least a hint of positivity. I am sure he won’t go near the penalty spot for a while
