Manchester City have reached an agreement to sign defender Ruben Dias from Benfica for 68 million euros ($79.13 million) plus add-ons, the Portuguese club have said.
The Benfica defender join City as the second senior centre-back following the earlier summer capture of Nathan Ake from Bournemouth.
Benfica confirmed the transfers in a statement on Sunday that they have reached an agreement with City over the sale of Ruben Dias in a transfer worth an initial £62 million (€68m/$79m) plus £3.3m in potential add-ons.
City defender Nicolas Otamendi will head the opposite way in a separate deal, with both players still needing to finalise their moves by signing contracts with their new teams.
A product of the Benfica youth academy, the 23-year-old Dias broke into the first-team in 2017 and has gone from strength to strength with every passing year
Dias has already racked up 136 appearances for the Portuguese giants, scoring 11 goals. He has also racked up 19 appearances for the Portuguese national team as well. (h/t Transfermarkt).
The arrival of Dias cannot come soon enough, and will help shore up a leaky City defence after their defensive weaknesses were laid bare in a 5-2 drubbing by Leicester City at the Etihad on Sunday.
Dias could be the best possible defender that fits the team well and has the chance to make a decade-long impact at the Etihad.

Today’s lost took all the excitement of a new signing out and create more confusion in a team that’s trying to recreate an identity and to find out that the team isn’t responding to pep’s methods anymore.

Hopefully he’s as good as Laporte

Can’t wait to see him with Laporte and Aké. We shouldn’t be too down about tonight’s game. Two out of our three best CBs didn’t play.

We need a leader, Ruben is a leader😂23 years old and leading the benfica side. Kounde is 2 years his senior and has not got a lot of experience. Ruben is very experienced already at such a young age, give the boy time
