In 2009, Chelsea had the opportunity to sign Sergio Aguero, who was playing for Atletico Madrid. Aguero made a mark during a UEFA Champions League match against Chelsea, prompting interest from the Blues. Frank Lampard, who played for Chelsea and later for Manchester City, encouraged the club to sign Aguero. However, despite the interest, Chelsea never made a formal offer for the striker and he eventually signed for Manchester City in 2011 for a reported transfer fee of around £35 million.

After joining Manchester City, Aguero had a successful career, scoring 260 goals in 390 appearances over 10 years. He became the side’s all-time leading goalscorer and played under three different managers during his time at the club. Chelsea missed out on the opportunity to sign Aguero, and Lampard later reflected on how close the striker was to joining the club. Aguero’s signing turned out to be a pivotal moment in Manchester City’s history, as he became a key player in the team’s success over the years.

Despite Chelsea’s interest in Aguero in 2009, the striker eventually signed for Manchester City and went on to have a successful career at the club. Lampard’s recommendation to sign Aguero was not acted upon by Chelsea, and the Argentine became an iconic figure at City. Aguero’s impact on the team was significant, and his goalscoring abilities made him a fan favorite at the Etihad Stadium. Chelsea’s missed opportunity to sign Aguero highlights how one decision can change the course of a player’s career and the fortunes of a football club.
