Sergio Aguero revealed that Chelsea showed interest in signing him after his impressive performance against them in the Champions League while he was still at Atletico Madrid. Despite the initial interest, Chelsea did not follow up on their enquiry and Aguero eventually joined Manchester City for £35m.
Frank Lampard, who played for Chelsea at the time, recommended Aguero to the club as a potential transfer target after being impressed by the player during the Champions League match. However, City ended up signing Aguero instead, leading to the Argentine becoming their all-time top scorer and one of the best strikers in Premier League history.
Chelsea’s decision not to pursue Aguero after Lampard’s recommendation ultimately benefited Manchester City, as Aguero went on to have a successful career at the Etihad, winning multiple trophies and establishing himself as one of the top strikers in English football. Lampard’s endorsement of Aguero as a transfer target was a pivotal moment in the striker’s career.
