West Ham United has decided not to sign Kalvin Phillips permanently at the end of the season after the on-loan Manchester City midfielder struggled to find his form and display discipline. Phillips, 28, was sent off against Nottingham Forest and has seen his stock nosedive, leading to his exclusion from Gareth Southgate’s recent England squad. It is unlikely that he will make the final squad for the Euros this summer as well.
With West Ham not pursuing a permanent deal for Phillips, the midfielder faces an uncertain future. He is expected to return to Manchester City, but it is doubtful that he will make it back into Pep Guardiola’s first-team plans. With four years left on his contract, Phillips could be a candidate to be sold, with recent reports suggesting that Leeds United, his former club, is interested in bringing him back.
Since joining West Ham on loan at the start of the year, Phillips has played in nine games but has not scored a goal or registered an assist. Leeds United is reportedly interested in making him a transfer priority if they achieve promotion back to the Premier League. Phillips, who has represented England 31 times, now faces the possibility of returning to Manchester City or joining Leeds United in the future.
