Thierry Henry, a former Arsenal star and Premier League Hall of Fame inductee, has criticized a Manchester City player for needing to improve his first touch. Henry, who knows what it takes to play in a Pep Guardiola team, highlighted the importance of the “bare minimum” in terms of controlling the ball. He mentioned that even though the player may not be physical like Drogba or Shearer, having a better first touch is essential.
The player in question is believed to be Erling Haaland, who has faced criticism recently for his performance outside of goalscoring. Despite scoring 20 goals in 26 Premier League appearances this season, Haaland has had 35 occasions where he failed to control the ball with his first touch. This highlights an area that the young striker can improve on moving forward, according to Henry.
Henry’s comments come after discussions around Haaland’s general play and link-up with teammates, with comparisons to League Two players being made. Despite Haaland’s goal-scoring abilities, improving his first touch and overall play will be crucial for his development as a player, especially under the guidance of Guardiola at Manchester City.
