Glenn Hoddle believes that an English player could have easily walked into the Manchester City team if they had the chance to sign him. City already boasts top English players like Phil Foden, John Stones, Jack Grealish, and Kyle Walker, who would likely start for most teams in the country. Hoddle also suggests that at least three of these players will start for the English national team at Euro 2024. However, it is noted that City’s quality and player roles make it tough for anyone, except for the best of the best, to simply walk into the team.

Hoddle specifically mentions Harry Kane as a player who would have strolled into the Manchester City XI if they had signed him. He praises Kane’s all-round striker abilities and calmness on the field. Ian Wright also suggests that Kane could potentially score 47 goals in a single Premier League season if he played for City. Although Kane may be a top striker, it is acknowledged that players like Erling Haaland have also been on top form in recent seasons, making it debatable whether Kane would truly walk into City’s starting lineup.

Despite Glenn Hoddle’s belief that Harry Kane could have easily started for Manchester City, especially in Erling Haaland’s presence, there are arguments to be made for the competition between top strikers in football. While Kane’s goal-scoring record is impressive, players like Haaland have also showcased their world-class abilities. Ultimately, City’s quality and the specific roles each player has in the team make it challenging for any new player to automatically secure a starting position.
