Roy Keane has been accused of bias against Erling Haaland by the Manchester City star’s father, Alf-Inge Haaland, who had a contentious history with the Irishman during their playing days. Keane did not hold back in his criticism of Haaland’s performance in City’s recent 0-0 draw with Arsenal, going as far as to compare the prolific striker to a “League Two player” in terms of his overall contribution to the game.
Despite Haaland’s impressive goal-scoring record of 31 goals in all competitions this season, Keane insisted on the Stick to Football podcast that the Norwegian striker is lacking in other aspects of his game, making him “nowhere near good enough” in those areas.
Alf-Inge Haaland reacted strongly to Keane’s remarks, suggesting that the former player may have a personal agenda against his son, unlike other critics like Ian Wright who have also questioned Erling’s all-round abilities. Haaland Sr referenced Keane’s past conflicts with him on the football pitch, including an incident in a Manchester derby where Keane injured him, potentially ending his career prematurely.
Despite the criticism, Haaland’s father pointed out that his son is still the Premier League’s top scorer, indicating that his performances are still contributing to the team’s success. After being benched following the Arsenal game, Haaland returned to the starting lineup and scored in victories against Aston Villa, Crystal Palace, and Luton, helping City to the top of the Premier League table.
With five trophies already to his name at City, Haaland’s focus remains on winning more silverware, regardless of what critics like Keane may say about his playing style. As he continues to find the back of the net and lead his team to victories, Haaland’s impact on the pitch speaks for itself, proving his worth beyond any personal agendas or criticisms.
