Joao Cancelo left Manchester City for Bayern Munich on loan in January 2023 after his relationship with Pep Guardiola became strained. Despite being an important player for City, Cancelo’s behavior and performance declined after the 2022 World Cup, leading to his departure. Guardiola was reportedly concerned about Cancelo’s attitude and lack of commitment, ultimately leading to his decision to find another club.
Cancelo’s move to Bayern Munich proved successful, as he made 21 starts for the German giants and helped them win the Bundesliga title. However, Bayern chose not to exercise their option to buy Cancelo permanently for £62m, and he moved to Barcelona on loan for the 2023/24 season. Cancelo has performed well for Barcelona, with 33 appearances and several goals and assists, sparking interest in a permanent transfer to the club.
Both Guardiola and Cancelo spoke about the decision to part ways, with Guardiola acknowledging Cancelo’s desire to play more and praising his work ethic. Cancelo expressed his gratitude for his time at City and his excitement for a new adventure. Overall, Cancelo’s move to Bayern and then Barcelona has been a successful transition, allowing him to continue playing at a high level and contributing to his new teams.
