Former Everton and US national team goalkeeper Tim Howard has praised Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden, suggesting that he has now solidified his place as an undroppable player under Pep Guardiola.
Foden’s standout performance against Manchester United, where he scored two goals in a 3-1 victory, has earned him widespread acclaim.
Despite an early lead by Marcus Rashford for United, City came back strong in the second half with Foden leading the charge.
Guardiola, hailing Foden as the best player in the Premier League this season, has been impressed by the young midfielder’s development.
Howard echoed this sentiment, comparing Foden’s importance to the team to stalwarts like Fernandinho and Rodri.
He said (NBC Sports): “Every time the ball comes to him there’s never a lost touch. It doesn’t matter if it’s a long crossfield ball or if he’s in the box. It’s literally like the ball is velcro to his foot. I think what we’re starting to see with Pep is, he has his love affairs with players, and it could be for a 10-game stretch, and he puts them in and he pulls them out and you’re wondering ‘why does he fall in and out of love?’
“But then there’s players who stand the test of time. Your Fernandinho’s, sometimes Bernardo Silva, Rodri. I feel like that is kind of where Phil Foden is going.
“You talk about what he’s accomplished and how good he is. The mentality to be in and around your hometown and to play for that football club. It’s great that he has good skill, but his ability of being mentally strong to go out there and perform is incredible at his age.”
The 23-year-old midfielder’s journey to becoming a key player for City has been remarkable, with his development and growth attributed to a combination of skill and mental fortitude.
Foden’s unwavering commitment to the sport from a young age has propelled him to the ranks of world-class players, solidifying his place in City’s lineup and garnering praise from fans and pundits alike.
