Sergio Conceicao has accused Pep Guardiola of making personal remarks about him during the match between Porto and Manchester City.
This comes after Porto’s defeat to City in the Champions League in October 2020, where Conceicao criticized Guardiola for pressuring referees and described his behavior as unpleasant.
Guardiola responded to these claims by denying that he pressured officials, stating that he has never done so at Bayern Munich or Barcelona.
However, Conceicao reiterated his accusations after Porto’s elimination from the Champions League by Arsenal, highlighting Guardiola’s behavior once again.
In an interview with O Jogo, Conceicao mentioned an incident involving Mikel Arteta, claiming that Arteta insulted his family during the game and he warned him to be careful, as the person he insulted was no longer present.
He said: “That’s not important. What [Mikel] Arteta says or doesn’t say, during the game, he turned to the bench in Spanish, I don’t know if it’s with Spanish coaches, because with [Pep] Guardiola, it was the same thing.”
“He [Mikel Arteta] insulted my family and in the end, I told him, ‘Be careful’, because whoever he insulted is no longer with us.”
This adds another layer to the tension between Conceicao and Guardiola. In the 2020/2021 season, City defeated Porto 3-1 at the Etihad Stadium, with goals from Aguero, Gundogan, and Torres after Diaz opened the scoring for Porto. The two teams also played out a 0-0 draw in the reverse fixture in Portugal.
As both teams continue to compete in the Champions League, it remains to be seen if Guardiola will address Conceicao’s claims about his behavior.
With City vying for multiple trophies and Guardiola focused on their performance, he may choose to avoid getting entangled in such controversies. However, given the seriousness of the allegations, Guardiola may feel compelled to respond.
In the midst of a heated title race and cup competitions, Guardiola’s handling of this situation will be closely watched by fans and pundits alike.
