Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has expressed his support for Kalvin Phillips to make a return to Gareth Southgate’s England squad in the future. Despite transferring from Manchester City to West Ham United in January in hopes of solidifying his position with the national team, the 28-year-old midfielder was not included in the squad for the upcoming friendlies against Brazil and Belgium.
Having participated in the FIFA World Cup in Qatar in December 2022, Phillips has set his sights on being selected for the European Championships in Germany this summer, with England being considered one of the top contenders for the tournament. Since moving to West Ham, Phillips has made seven appearances under David Moyes in both the Premier League and UEFA Europa League.
Although Phillips struggled to secure regular playing time during his time at Manchester City, Guardiola remains optimistic about his chances of representing England in the future. Guardiola praised Phillips’ character and work ethic, emphasizing the importance of getting regular minutes on the pitch.
Southgate, on the other hand, cited Phillips’ lack of form as the reason for his exclusion from the squad, stating that his performance at Manchester City was below par. The England manager made it clear that playing time was essential for Phillips to be considered for international selection.
Despite the setback, Guardiola believes that Phillips has the potential to earn a recall to the England squad with his dedication and hard work. The midfielder’s move to West Ham has provided him with more opportunities to showcase his talent and stake a claim for a spot in the national team. With the European Championships on the horizon, Phillips will be aiming to impress both his club manager and the England coaching staff to earn a place in the squad.
