Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has hailed Phil Foden as the player of the season so far, following his outstanding performance against Manchester United on Sunday. City came from behind to beat United 3-1 at the Etihad, with Foden playing a key role in the victory.
Despite Marcus Rashford giving United the lead and Erling Haaland missing a golden opportunity before halftime, Foden’s two goals in the second half turned the game around, including a stunning strike from the edge of the area. While Haaland scored a consolation goal in injury time, Guardiola’s focus was on Foden and his standout performance.
Foden has been in exceptional form throughout the season, impressing regardless of the circumstances or the players around him. Many expected him to decline when Kevin De Bruyne and Erling Haaland returned from injury, but Foden has continued to shine and improve.
Guardiola praised Foden after the game, stating that he has been the most decisive player of the season.
He said on Sky after the game: “It is what it is. He is the player of the season. With all respect for all the other incredible players, no one has been so decisive as him this season.”
The young midfielder’s consistency and impact on City’s performances have been remarkable, pushing the team towards the top of the table.
With Foden’s outstanding form, he is now a strong candidate for the PFA Player of the Year award. If he can maintain his level of performance until the end of the season, he will be a difficult player to overlook for the prestigious award.
Having already won the Young PFA Player of the Year award twice, Foden will be motivated to add the main award to his collection.
His contributions to City’s success this season have been invaluable, and Guardiola’s praise further solidifies his status as a standout performer in the Premier League.
