Former Manchester United player and football pundit Gary Neville recently commented on Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson Moraes, stating that he was at fault for the penalty his team conceded against Liverpool.
The incident occurred when Ederson kicked out at Darwin Nunez, who was through on goal due to a poor back pass from Nathan Ake. This led to Alexis Mac Allister scoring from the penalty spot after Ederson was substituted due to an injury sustained during the play.
Neville described Ederson’s actions as a “moment of madness” and criticized the goalkeeper for his lack of composure in the situation.
Despite Ortega stepping in as a substitute and City managing to secure a 1-1 draw against Liverpool, both teams dropped points, allowing Arsenal to move to the top of the Premier League table.
The debate surrounding the penalty incident continues, with some pointing fingers at Ake for the initial error and others blaming Ederson.
Neville firmly believes that the responsibility lies with the Brazilian goalkeeper. He emphasized that Ederson should have remained composed and not committed to the challenge, as he was unlikely to reach the ball before Nunez.
“It’s a moment of madness. Ederson is usually much more composed in moments like that. He just wellies [Darwin] Nunez up in the air. He just commits. He must surely know he’s not getting there and he should just jockey him wide”, he said on Sky Sports.
While it’s unclear whether Ederson could have intercepted the ball before Nunez, what is certain is that Ake’s back pass put the team in a difficult position.
The Dutch defender’s mistake added to City’s woes, highlighting the need for more precision and composure in their defensive play. Neville’s analysis underscores the importance of strong decision-making and execution at the highest levels of professional football.
