In anticipation of a crucial match against Liverpool, Michael Dawson has highlighted the unique abilities of Manchester City’s defender, John Stones, suggesting that even Virgil van Dijk may not possess the same skill set.
With the title race hanging in the balance, City’s clash with Liverpool on Sunday is set to be a season-defining encounter, with Klopp’s side currently leading by a single point.
The stakes are high, and a victory for either team could significantly impact their standing in the title race. Should City emerge victorious, they would gain an advantage, but a win for Liverpool could see them extend their lead. A draw, on the other hand, could open the door for Arsenal to take the top spot on goal difference.
As the match approaches, all eyes will be on Pep Guardiola’s lineup, with players like Rodri, De Bruyne, Foden, and Haaland expected to play crucial roles.
However, it is John Stones who has caught the attention of Michael Dawson, with his ability to seamlessly transition into midfield setting him apart from other defenders.
Speaking on the Sky Sports Football Podcast, Dawson expressed his admiration for Stones’s versatility and contribution to City’s playing style.
He praised Stones for his attacking prowess and unique playing style, suggesting that he is a key player for both City and the English national team.
He said: “John Stones, a fellow Yorkshireman, I love watching Manchester City, I love watching the things they do you just think is mindblowing for a football team but they go and do it and they do it well.
“Stones playing in some of these positions that you think a centre-half, do I see Virgil being able to do that? No, I don’t.
“They’re completely different kinds of players. Stones you see him marauding forward, finding spaces and giving other people an opportunity, stretches the game.
“So I think Stones as an Englishman, our best centre-half and I think he will play come the summer in the Euros.
“Pep utilises him in different positions and it works because that’s just what Pep does.
“He has this group of players that understand and Stones, for a centre-half, I don’t see any other centre-halves out there that could probably go and play that position.
“I’m sure you look at Spain and Barcelona’s team, they could do but it’s always evolving and that’s what Pep’s doing.”
While Rodri may be considered the glue that holds the team together, Stones’s impact on City’s attacking play cannot be overlooked.
His ability to push forward from defense and provide passing options in midfield has proven invaluable to City’s success. Despite not always grabbing the headlines, Stones’s contributions have been instrumental in City’s title challenge this season.
In a season where every match counts, Stones’s role in the team could prove decisive in City’s pursuit of silverware.
