Manchester City is reportedly considering making a summer bid for Newcastle midfielder Bruno Guimaraes, according to reports from FootballTransfers.com. Journalist Jacque Talbot states that the Premier League champions have a keen interest in the Brazilian international, with manager Pep Guardiola being a big admirer of the player.
Despite signing a new contract in October, Guimaraes’ deal reportedly includes a release clause of £100m, allowing any club to sign him. Newcastle is said to prefer the 26-year-old to move abroad and may consider a lower fee if clubs from Spain or France show interest. However, if City enters the race, they are expected to pay the full amount, equalling their club record transfer fee.
While other Premier League teams like Chelsea and Liverpool have previously been linked with Guimaraes, it is reported that a move to these clubs is unlikely. Paris Saint-Germain is seen as City’s main competition, with the French club having monitored the midfielder for some time.
The potential acquisition of Guimaraes raises questions about his role in City’s starting lineup. With Kalvin Phillips expected to leave permanently at the end of the season, Guimaraes could be his replacement. However, as Phillips was not a regular starter, it remains to be seen where the Brazilian would fit in the team.
Guimaraes could be considered as an alternative to Rodri, but it is unlikely that City would spend £100m on a player for rotational purposes. If he does join City, he may be asked to play a more advanced role in the team.
