Manchester City unveils ambitious renewable energy project with more than 10,000 solar panels

Manchester City, the Premier League champions, have unveiled ambitious plans to become a leading renewable energy producer in the world of football.

This announcement is part of the ongoing development efforts at the Etihad Stadium and the surrounding campus in east Manchester. The club’s owners are committed to ensuring that their facilities remain top-notch in the global footballing landscape.

These continuous improvements aim to avoid a situation similar to that of their local rivals, Manchester United, whose new leadership is working on plans to enhance or potentially rebuild Old Trafford.

Manchester City’s latest project focuses on sustainability, with plans to make the entire Etihad Campus self-sufficient in energy supply through solar energy production.

Recently announced by Manchester City, the club aims to make its City Football Academy training base one of the largest producers of renewable energy in football worldwide.

The club is seeking approval from Manchester City Council for the installation of 10,887 solar panels, expected to generate 4.39 MWh of renewable energy annually.

This self-supplied energy will offset the City Football Academy’s annual usage and will also be shared with the Etihad Stadium as part of the Club’s goal to achieve carbon net zero by 2030.

In addition to their renewable energy plans, Manchester City is expanding and upgrading the Etihad Stadium. Construction work around the North Stand is ongoing to increase capacity and improve the overall stadium experience.

The continued development around the Etihad Stadium will enhance its capabilities to host major football events and concerts, including being a key venue for the upcoming European Championships.
