Jurgen Klopp expressed his concern over the potential injury that could have occurred to Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister during the match against Manchester City.
In the closing moments of the game, City’s Jeremy Doku made contact with Mac Allister’s chest as he tried to clear the ball in the box.
Despite the contact, no penalty was awarded to Liverpool, leaving Klopp feeling that Doku had escaped punishment for a dangerous challenge.
Images from the match showed Mac Allister on the ground in pain after the incident, prompting debates about whether it should have been a penalty or not.
Klopp, speaking to Sky Sports after the match, was adamant that it was a clear penalty and that Doku could have seriously injured Mac Allister.
“Isn’t it there to make the right decision and not thinking about how high the bar is to overturn the decision?”, the Liverpool boss asked.
Klopp continued, “In all positions on the pitch, it is 100 per cent a foul and it’s a yellow card. They said he hit the ball but he can only do that because his foot is right there. But if the ball is not there, he kills him, the foot has nothing to do with it.”
“It is as easy as that.”
“For all football people on the planet, it’s a penalty. If you don’t think it is one, then maybe you are not a football person.”
Despite the controversy, Doku and Manchester City were fortunate to avoid punishment for the challenge. Klopp’s frustration was evident as he expressed relief that Mac Allister did not suffer a serious injury.
Looking ahead, City may count themselves lucky if the decision not to penalize Doku helps them in their defense of the Premier League title.
Overall, Klopp’s concerns highlighted the potential risks of reckless challenges on the field and the importance of fair and consistent decision-making by officials.
The incident served as a reminder of the fine margins between fair play and dangerous play in football.
