In a fiery exchange during Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Anfield, Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne clashed with manager Pep Guardiola. The 32-year-old was visibly upset after being substituted in the second half, with Mateo Kovacic replacing him in the 69th minute. City, who had taken the lead through John Stones’ goal, saw their Anfield winless streak continue after Alexis Mac Allister equalized in the second half.
A mistake between Nathan Ake and Ederson led to City conceding an early penalty, erasing their first-half lead. De Bruyne’s corner had set up Stones’ goal, but as City struggled in the second half, Guardiola made the decision to replace De Bruyne and Julian Alvarez to regain control of the game. Despite both teams having six attempts on target, Liverpool created more chances with 19 compared to City’s 10.
De Bruyne, who was substituted for only the third time this season, had made a significant impact for City since returning from injury. He was visibly unhappy with Guardiola’s decision and was seen angrily confronting the manager and backroom staff. Guardiola had also faced criticism for starting Manuel Akanji over Ruben Dias in central defense.
The loss leaves City trailing Liverpool and Arsenal by one point in the title race, with just 10 matches remaining in the season. City will face Arsenal at home in their next Premier League fixture after the international break, followed by an FA Cup quarter-final against Newcastle United. Guardiola and City will need to regroup and refocus as they aim to secure a fourth successive title.
