‘It’s very difficult’… Tomas Soucek gives honest verdict on Man City loanee Kalvin Phillips

Tomas Soucek recently shared his honest opinion on Kalvin Phillips as a player since joining West Ham United.

Phillips, who was loaned to Manchester City for the remainder of the Premier League season in the January transfer window, has had a challenging time since joining the club.

Despite being signed by Pep Guardiola in the summer of 2022, Phillips has struggled for game time, playing only 31 games in his first 18 months at City, with an average of 29.4 minutes per appearance.

Things haven’t improved much for Phillips at West Ham, as he has yet to complete a full 90 minutes in his seven games and was substituted at half-time in the recent match.

Despite his struggles, fellow midfielder Tomas Soucek believes in Phillips’ abilities but acknowledges the difficulties he is facing currently.

Soucek said: “I see him every day.

“He plays in good form in the sessions but it is very difficult for him, because after maybe two years at Manchester City, for any player who doesn’t play that often it’s very difficult to play in the games.

“It’s difficult for him but we all support him, we are with him. He’s a hard worker, which I like.

“I like his style and wish him all the best for the future. He’s an important player for us, and he’s a very good player.”

With Phillips under contract at City until 2028, his future remains uncertain. City may struggle to recoup the £45m they paid for him if they decide to sell, potentially leading to another loan spell for Phillips next season.

Despite his struggles, Soucek’s endorsement of Phillips indicates that there is still hope for the midfielder to rediscover his form and make a positive impact in the future.
