Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp responded to recent comments made by Trent Alexander-Arnold about Manchester City, praising the club and its players.
Alexander-Arnold had suggested that despite City’s success in terms of trophies, Liverpool’s victories meant more to the fans due to the manner in which success was achieved at each club. This sparked a debate online before the big game on Sunday.
Manchester City’s Erling Haaland also responded to Alexander-Arnold’s comments, highlighting the significance of winning last season’s Treble and implying that the Liverpool player had not experienced such a feat.
In response, Klopp acknowledged the greatness of Manchester City, praising the club’s manager Pep Guardiola and their talented players, such as Kevin De Bruyne and Phil Foden.
Klopp defended Alexander-Arnold, stating that he had shown respect towards City and their success. Despite facing backlash from City fans and players, Klopp’s focus was on acknowledging the achievements and greatness of both clubs.
Jurgen Klopp said, “I had a few people telling me what I should say.”
He continued, “I am not sure how often we have to say in this club how often we respect (Manchester) City. Pep (Guardiola) is the best manager in the world.
“I have a good life not being even close to that, incredible players, the best No 9, (Kevin) De Bruyne will go down in history with Steven Gerrard, imagine that conversation! Phil Foden, the best English player.”
“I am pretty sure he showed total respect as well. Man City; the most successful in years and maybe Europe. Ridiculous record. Means a lot for their people I am sure,” Klopp said.
“Maybe for us it’s because we didn’t win that many (Premier League titles). It’s not that we win five and then six and the fifth was better. That’s it. You love these interviews when someone says what they think and the whole world (reacts).
“It’s still allowed to think what we want. Nothing wrong with what Trent said in my view.”
As City prepared to face Liverpool, they were mindful of their poor record at Anfield in recent meetings and took precautions to ensure their safety and security ahead of the match.
The game on Sunday was crucial for both teams, with City aiming to take the top spot in the Premier League standings by securing a victory.
However, they faced a tough challenge at Anfield, where they had struggled in previous encounters. Despite the tension surrounding the match, Klopp and City both emphasized the importance of mutual respect and sportsmanship in their comments leading up to the game.
