Manchester City legend Fernandinho shared some tactical advice he passed on to Rodri, the defensive midfield mainstay under Pep Guardiola.

Fernandinho, a Brazilian legend known for his defensive midfield prowess, joined Manchester City from Shakhtar Donetsk for a transfer fee of around £34 million. With almost 400 appearances and 13 trophies with the club, his departure left big shoes to fill.

To replace Fernandinho, Manchester City turned to Atletico Madrid, signing Rodrigo Hernandez, also known as Rodri. The club met Rodri’s €70 million release clause, setting a new record for the Premier League side at the time.

Before his departure, Fernandinho took the time to mentor Rodri, who has since become a key player in Guardiola’s system.

In an exclusive conversation with the Denilson Show, Fernandinho praised Rodri, who revealed that he learned a “little card” trick from the Brazilian footballing legend.

“He’s good, he’s good. Fantastic player,” Fernandinho said of his successor at the Etihad Stadium.

“I talked to him these days when I was there, and he said, ‘I’m learning from you to give some kicks. Receive a little card to stay out.’ The man (Pep Guardiola) demands a lot in that position.”

Rodri has embraced Guardiola’s tactics and has become a crucial part of Manchester City’s playing style.

Since joining the club in 2019, Rodri has made nearly 250 appearances, scoring 24 goals and winning 10 trophies. He even scored the winning goal in the 2023 UEFA Champions League final. Fernandinho spoke highly of Rodri’s development under Guardiola, highlighting his importance in the team.

With Rodri’s growth and impact on the team, it is clear that he has become an integral part of Guardiola’s system at Manchester City. His success on the pitch reflects the hard work and dedication he has put into his game since joining the club.
