Jeremy Doku of Manchester City has finally spoken out about the incident involving Alexis Mac Allister of Liverpool at Anfield earlier this month.
Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp’s teams played a memorable 1-1 draw in the Premier League, as they compete with Arsenal for the English top-flight title. This match also marked the final meeting between the two coaches in British football.
John Stones opened the scoring for Manchester City in the first half with a well-executed corner kick routine, but Alexis Mac Allister equalized from the penalty spot in the second half after Ederson fouled Liverpool’s Darwin Nunez.
Despite strong chances for Jeremy Doku and Phil Foden to secure all three points for Manchester City, a late decision in the penalty area left Liverpool fans feeling aggrieved as they believed they should’ve been awarded a second penalty in the game.
A challenge between Jeremy Doku and Alexis Mac Allister saw Doku’s boot make contact with the Argentine midfielder, causing controversy. Doku acknowledged that it was a risky challenge but maintained that it wasn’t a penalty.
“No, it was a risky challenge,” Doku said. “I could have handled it differently. I still think it wasn’t a penalty but I know some other referees would have given it. But it wasn’t a penalty so I was happy.”
“Was I worried? For a moment when they were looking at the VAR and maybe looking for a penalty. For me, it wasn’t a penalty, but I understand why some people are angry and why the Liverpool fans think it was a penalty.”
As the Premier League title race intensifies, Manchester City faces Arsenal in a crucial match after the international break. City is also juggling their title aspirations with a push for another Treble, including an FA Cup semi-final against Chelsea and a Champions League clash with Real Madrid.
