The first international break of 2024 is generating excitement, especially for Manchester City who can use the two-week break to recover from injuries before a crucial Premier League match against Arsenal. England also has two exciting friendlies coming up against Brazil and Belgium as they prepare for Euro 2024, with a talented squad that includes City players like Foden, Stones, and Walker. However, there is concern that Manchester United starlet Kobbie Mainoo’s inclusion in the squad could spell bad news for Foden, who hopes to play in a central role.
Foden has expressed his desire to play centrally for Manchester City and has shown his ability in that position, but has often been deployed on the flanks by Guardiola. There have been calls for him to play in midfield for England alongside Bellingham and Rice, but Mainoo’s emergence could impact Foden’s chances of playing in his preferred position. If Mainoo impresses during the upcoming friendlies, Foden may find himself back on the left flank instead of in midfield.
While playing on the left flank is not a bad position for Foden, as he would still be part of a strong England side, it is not where he sees himself playing in the long run. Southgate has previously used Guardiola’s decisions as an excuse not to play Foden in midfield, but with limited options in that position, Foden may miss out on his dream role for England if Mainoo solidifies his place in the starting XI. Overall, there is uncertainty surrounding Foden’s position for both Manchester City and England as Mainoo’s emergence adds competition for a midfield spot.
