Manchester City’s John Stones’ impressive 125-appearance run without receiving a yellow card at the Etihad Stadium was brought to an end against Brentford this week. The England international centre-back was cautioned by referee Darren England during the first half of the game, which ultimately saw Manchester City emerge as the victors.
Erling Haaland scored midway through the second half on what turned out to be a frustrating evening of action in front of the Etihad support. This victory ensured that there would be no further fallout from the 1-1 draw with Chelsea just three days prior.
Stones’ first-half yellow card has surprised football fans online, as it ended a long-standing run of contests without a booking at home. According to confirmation from StatCity, John Stones’ yellow card against Brentford this week was his first ever booking at the Etihad Stadium, ending a run of 125 appearances without punishment at the home of the reigning Premier League champions.
Stones was one of Pep Guardiola’s early signings, joining Manchester City in the summer of 2016. The England international joined the club in the same window as fellow legendary figure Ilkay Gundogan. City completed the signing of Stones for a reported £47.5 million from Everton on a six-year contract, potentially reaching £2.5 million in add-ons, making him the world’s second most expensive defender in history at the time, behind only David Luiz.
Despite initial skepticism about Manchester City’s financial outlay on the player eight years ago, Stones has since gone on to win multiple Premier League titles and played a starring role in their UEFA Champions League success last season.
