Real Madrid is reportedly eyeing 21-year-old Brazilian international Yan Couto, who is currently on loan at Girona from Manchester City, as a priority signing for the upcoming summer transfer window. According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Real Madrid has set its sights on the promising right-back as they look to strengthen their squad for the next season.
Yan Couto has made a name for himself as one of the top full-backs in La Liga since joining Girona on loan from Manchester City over 18 months ago. Although he hails from Brazil and has spent his formative years in his homeland, he graduated from the Coritiba FC before being signed by Manchester City in July 2020. Despite this, he has yet to secure a place in the Premier League club’s first team.
Having gone on three loan spells away from Manchester City, with two of them being at Girona, Couto has significantly contributed to Girona’s success in the current season, showcasing his talents with two goals and seven assists in 28 appearances so far. His remarkable progress has attracted the attention of several high-profile clubs, with Barcelona previously attempting to secure his services.
Real Madrid has a legitimate interest in Yan Couto, especially considering the age of their current right-back Dani Carvajal, who, at over 30, may see a decline in performance levels in the near future. Additionally, with Lucas Vazquez and Nacho approaching the end of their contracts, there is a need to invest in a young and talented right-back, with Couto being the preferred choice to succeed Carvajal.
While it remains uncertain if Manchester City will be open to letting go of Couto in the upcoming transfer window, it is expected that he will return to the Etihad when his loan spell with Girona concludes at the end of the 2023/24 season. Real Madrid’s pursuit of Yan Couto reflects their proactive approach to planning for the future and building a strong squad for the long term.
