Pep Guardiola has exceeded many expectations by staying with Manchester City for eight years, despite never having spent longer than four seasons in a job before. However, he has made it clear that he has ambitions beyond his time at Manchester City and aspires to enter into international management.
Guardiola has been highly successful at Manchester City, winning five Premier League titles and the club’s first Champions League last season. Despite this, he has revealed that he won’t be at the club forever. In an interview with ESPN Brasil, Guardiola expressed his desire to manage a national team for a World Cup or a European Championship, stating, “I would like to have the experience of living through a World Cup, or a Euro or a Copa America, or whatever it is. I would like that.”
It is evident that Guardiola’s next goal post-Manchester City is to be the manager of a national team. He is contracted to City until 2025, so a departure is unlikely until at least the end of next season, and he may even be tempted to stay longer. However, the club will eventually have to face the daunting task of replacing him, and it remains to be seen how Guardiola’s intense and complex manager methods will translate to the international stage.
Replacing a manager who has had a significant presence at a club can be a challenge, as has been seen in the case of Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure from Manchester United over a decade ago. Similarly, Liverpool is likely to face a similar challenge this summer when Jurgen Klopp departs. Manchester City will have to prepare for this eventual reality, and the football world will be watching with bated breath to see if Guardiola will be able to replicate his success on the international stage. It would be interesting to see if Guardiola’s intense and complex methods can translate to the international stage, could you imagine him as the manager of the England national team?
Ultimately, Guardiola’s next step in his managerial career will be intriguing, and it will be interesting to see if he can achieve the same level of success outside of Manchester City.
