Former English footballer Paul Merson has likened Kevin De Bruyne to Arsenal legend Dennis Bergkamp. He expressed that De Bruyne’s style and game play remind him of the immediate former English midfielder. In January, Jamie Carragher also claimed that De Bruyne has surpassed the likes of David Silva, Sergio Aguero and Vincent Kompany in both ability and performance, a stance that Merson shares.
Gary Lineker further added his view and said that Kevin De Bruyne is more versatile than older midfield legends such as Roy Keane, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, Paul Scholes, and Patrick Vieira without a doubt which the former English footballer subsequently backed. Despite joining the Premier League side Manchester City several years ago from Chelsea, De Bruyne has demonstrated exceptional skills that have been unchallenged. Merson went on to laud the Belgian international for his prowess, stating that he has brought a fresh breath to the sport with his intelligence and vision in the field which reminds him of Dennis Bergkamp, who exerted a similar influence at Arsenal during his spell.
The reputable Englishman mentioned that De Bruyne’s passes and game-reading are exceptional, and he appears to be in a league of his own just like Bergkamp. He further stated that the Belgian international cannot only find passes no one else can but also ensure consistency in his game playing. For the former forward, De Bruyne is now Manchester City’s main man despite the array of talented players at the club.
As a result of his exceptional technical skills and productivity in the midfield, De Bruyne outshines the Dutch international in his opinion. The player is quite versatile and has aced different roles for Manchester City on the pitch and can even effectively defend when required. He said this in a statement, “For all the top players they’ve got, he’s the main man in my opinion.”
